Biography

Katherine Sheers paints interior landscapes. Decades of meditation practice and sustained therapeutic inquiry inform her ongoing preoccupation with perception and emotional truth. Working predominantly in oils, she creates abstract spaces in which emotional, psychological and sensory experiences are given material form. The work is created within and inhabits the threshold between body and mind.

Trained at Chelsea College of Art, Sheers's early career as a lingerie designer established a deep regard for the body. Viewing it as the bridge between our experiences of the external and internal worlds, Sheers employs increasingly somatic processes in the making of her work, using her own body in direct contact with the canvas before reworking the surface with considered brushwork. This combination of instinctive physicality and deliberate refinement conjures a sensual, choreographed language of marks that often retain the movement of their making.
